"The Myth of Multi-tasking," the challenge for many is to read this excellent article in The New Atlantis without interruption

Christine Rosen, the senior editor of The New Atlantis and a fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center has written one of the best articles on "The Myth of Multi-tasking" that I have read in some time. This article includes references to the latest neuroscience research, as well as thought provoking speculation on what the consequences of out-of-control multi-tasking might be for our society.
Stressed out? Try some Art.... Twenty Five Cents, EXACT CHANGE ONLY!

Recently came across a fun picture on Engadget of a Anger Release vending machine by artist Yarisa Kublitz. The
Now, in my opinion, all vending machines are just as hostile as this artist's rendition, and they ALL probably could use a moment to chill out and relax once in a while.
What do you mean, "Productivity isn't everything?"

A member of our Life Balance community recently sent me an email with a simple quote that he thought I might like from the May 3, 2008 edition of the Economist magazine:
"Productivity isn't everything, but in the long-run it is almost everything." Attributed to Paul Krugman, from his book "The Age of Diminished Expectations."
In thinking about this quote, I decided that I either agree or disagree with that notion based on what it means to be productive. I have not read the book, so I have no idea of how the author defines productivity. I have only my own definition to work with.
In my experience, as the co-author of a time management software application, Productivity is a healthy balance of "Proaction," "Action" and "Reaction" to attain something that you feel is worth the trouble of exerting all that effort -- ideally something that makes you or those around you happy. :-)

Find your own Inner Indiana Jones.. in everyday life.

There are days when I am particularly busy, facing down some imagined tiger, when I catch myself humming the Indiana Jones theme.
Because when you are facing down your average 600 pound imaginary tiger, you have only two choices. Recognize that the tiger is imaginary, or not!
Sometimes, you can look your imaginary tiger in the eye, and see that it is only a snarling bit of your to do list in front of you. Just another email message. Just a meeting requiring a bit of theatrics on your part.
And then, there are times, when no matter what you do... those tasks won't shrink down to what they are. They stay big and scary, with teeth and a threatening demeanor. At those times, there is only one way to handle it.
The world is so full of a number of things...

The World: NASA Photo ID: AS17-148-22727 Date Taken: 12/07/72 Description: View of the Earth as seen by the Apollo 17 crew.
That is the first line of a poem called "Happy Thought" by Robert Louis Stevenson that was in a book I had as a child, "A Child's Garden of Verses." I was sick a lot, and so was he. I read it over and over again in solidarity.
The poem goes:
The world is so full of a number of things,
I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings.
This little poem has given me much food for thought over the years. It feels almost like a zen koan.
Are kings happy?
What things in the world bring everyone happiness?
What brings ME happiness?
Homework Habits, a story of understanding the direction you want to go...

Baci helping with my homework: The secret of my successI've been taking a class in coastal navigation for sailing at the Edgewood Sailing School in Rhode Island. For the first time in many years, I've had homework to do.
This past week I got my homework done very early. It was for the last scheduled class. Certificates were issued to mark our accomplishments. And while I was happy to have learned so much, on my way to class, I also felt kind of disappointed that I wouldn't have any MORE homework to do. Eh? What is that about?
Making the most of a quiet day

A quiet day. Ah.
The whole thought of it conjures up visions of sunny windows, hot coffee and pancakes, reading a book in a comfy chair.
And yet, most people these days have a quiet day so rarely that they don't know what to do when one suddenly appears.
Even rarer is the person who can plan to have a quiet day to restore the spirit and renew their energy before they are called upon to handle the next flurry of errands, household chores, email, and general mayhem. You, dear user of Life Balance(TM) software, are among the fortunate few.
