Feature request

LanMan's picture

I thought I would go ahead and start a new feature request thread.

I would like to see the Note field expanded to support the current Palm 32K limit. It looks like LB still supports only 4KB.

RE: Feature request

Hi LanMan,

Isn't it disappointing that these forums are so dead? I sometimes feel like such a :+ for continuing to check in on the website and forums.

For what it's worth, and there's little evidence to believe that it's much, the Llamas now prefer that all feature requests be submitted into their online tracking system. See the thread pinned to the top of the board, "Welcome! -- Please read me before you post".

RE: Feature request

Oops, good point. I did go ahead and send that email form.

Thanks

RE: Feature request

"Isn't it disappointing that these forums are so dead? I sometimes feel like such a for continuing to check in on the website and forums."

I have some concerns myself about the User Forums, because the purpose that they were originally created for, was

1) to be the center of technical support for Life Balance.

and

2) We also wanted to get people talking about their projects and goals and helping each other out.

When we moved most of the technical support into the Support Center, the User Forums have definitely languished. However, the Support Center has proved itself to be a big win for both us and our customers. We're handling roughly 100 support requests each month, and 60% of those requests are resolved within 24 hours. This is a big improvement over handling technical support in the forums, where we could respond to a question and the customer might never even know it. We've handled thousands of tickets using the new support center. While things here might seem slow in the User Forums... for us, things are hopping.

Yes, my positive energy had to be applied elsewhere for a while, and some people got cranky here in my absence, which drove away the positive energy (including MINE) that would bring more people to participate these forums.

Now, I'm baaaaaaaaaaaack!

And I hope that those who felt bullied and not willing to post their tender dreams into such a negative environment will begin to feel protected and nurtured again.

People have not been talking about their projects and goals as much as I would like to see. I think that the structure of the forums is partially what kept that activity from taking hold. Sometimes we get posts that go something like "I have a project A, that has a subtask B" and I can't get it done, help me." Are we talking about opening a restaurant, or making a better storm sewer, or building a community playground? The context matters! The obstacles you might face when you are doing a project are frequently a function of the context. if you leave the context out, we can't suggest a project structure or tasks to help overcome those obstacles. And it gets really boring, who wants to read about Project A? Now that playground, could be hitting some government red tape, the restaurant might be facing time pressure to open by a given date, and the storm sewer could be running into technical problems in the manufacturing. So, it leads to different ideas about how to help, and the discussion is richer.

First off, I also want folks here to be aware that the user forums are using an old product, DCForums, which we will need to replace eventually. Also, I want to restructure the discussions completely to try to jump start the discussion, which is about living a balanced life, figuring out how to achieve your goals, how to break down big scary projects, how to motivate yourself to really do it, and celebrating your successes, and overcoming your obstacles.

However, I don't want to replace DCForum until after we finish the next releases because we are making good use of the forums for managing the beta activity.

If anyone has suggestions on what to use to replace these forums, we're open to suggestions. We're considering Drupal. If you have ideas on that, please start a new thread.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for how to jumpstart more meaningful discussion on living a balanced lifestyle.... start a post about that, and I'll jump in.

And of course, there's no reason why you can't get started with talking about your projects now... with the existing structure... and I'll be happy to help.

Best wishes,

RE: Feature request

I am not a beta tester and have not seen it, but I can pass on what I was told a while back in correspondence with Jean: some of the new features of the coming Mac desktop upgrade include expanded use of AppleScript and Automator, and (I think) iCal integration. If I am mistaken, I am sorry. Unfortunately, I have no idea whether the features I most want and have requested are coming. They are: hiding completed items, automatic recording of creation dates--so I know how old an item is--, counting of the items in ToDo List view, easier navigation, among others. But I do care very much that the synchronization between the desktop and the Palm (especially my older Palm OS 4.1 m515) continues to work well. So I am patient with them as they make sure the beta is ready. They are still one of the very few companies that offers a good, solid Mac OSX desktop to go with the Palm software. Natara makes good software for the Palm, but they scorn the Mac community.

RE: Feature request

Hi,
You got it right. AppleScript, Automator, iCal Integration and other goodies are in the last stages of beta testing in the Macintosh release. Those of you who have been reading the blog and our posts here know that we have had a very difficult time the last few months, helping take care of my sister until she died. We are back on the llama path.

RE: Feature request

Three things I thought about today that would really be helpful:

1. The ability to sort outline items by name, date due, etc. Of course all tasks would stay under their parent tasks and only sort within their own set of subtasks. And of course items that are under a "complete subtasks in order" task would stay sorted manually.

2. Related to #1: When sorting tasks have an option to sort completed items last. I hate the way my completed items and uncompleted items are all mixed up.

3. The ability to hide completed tasks (instead of purging them).

Add another one as suggested by my therapist. I have adult ADD (something Life Balance is frequently advertised as helping) and she has found that most ADD sufferers work better with short, concise to-do lists. We thought that being able to filter the to-do list to something shorter would be a big help. After thinking about it, I would love to be able to filter my to-do list by due date (such as only show tasks with due dates over-due or due today) and or by importance.

Option for "cognitive state"

... or whatever you may call it.

The thing is: you should do your things,
WHERE you can do them (places)
WHEN you can do them (in terms of let's say opening hours)
but also WHILE you're capable of doing them properly.

I would love to see an option in the task-list right next to the places drop-down where I could choose - let's say - "Brain toasted" to bring tasks like watering your plants or do the dishes. Or you could have an option like "Concentrated as hell" to do your very important math-calculations...

You could define your own mind-state or cognitive states as you can define places. In the task-details you could move a slider from "fatigue" to "concentrated" or something like that.

I never saw such a feature in any task-planning tool, so I think it would be a great new feature for Life Balance to push it back to the top.

What do you think about it? Any comments?

RE: Option for "cognitive state"

Some people make variant places for this sort of thing, so you may have Study, Study- and Study--, where the - and -- indicate relatively low levels of concentration, energy, whatever.

I tried this and it was just too much bother to maintain, to be honest, but to each his own.

Cheers

RE: Option for "cognitive state"

That "cognitive state" was exactly the thing that I thought was missing in Life Balance. I would call it "energy", and, instead of a dropdown list, I would use a slider, consistant with the selection of importance and effort.

Then, in the To Do list view, with the energy slider on top of the screen, when I feel with great energy and in a good mood, I would move the slider to the right and the tasks would magically switch positions to suggest the highest effort/important needing ones at the top. Similarly, when in low energy state, I would move the slider to the left, and the easiest tasks would come first.

For me, this energy slider, aside from hiding (instead of purging) completed tasks and some other minor changes, would make Life Balance very close to perfection!

It would be useful to have this sort as
- tasks to do
- recurring tasks that have been completed, but will need doing in future
- other completed tasks

and perhaps also some way of indicating a recurring task that will need doing in future? such as a small icon against the task?

I have long used for this purpose a simple letter indicator, such as the following

r = repeats daily (i.e. 1 day after being checked off)
r2 = repeats every two days
rw " weekly
rm " monthly
rcT recurs every Tuesday (after being checked off, reappears next Tuesday).

and so forth.
I started using this long ago with Todo Plus on the Palm because the native Palm todo list couldn't handle repeats back then.

I also use a variety of other codes which, when I search on, will only show the tasks that I want; for example -wg- = weekly goal.
