New software for making LB even more effective - IntelliInput4LB

Hi LB users,

I love LB, but I find it difficult to open it all the time when I have a quick idea to jot down (I guess you can keep it open all the time but still). It is also takes too much time to click your way through setting a context, adding a due date or a repeating date. That is why I come up with the idea to write a "helper" utility for a quick input (LB does not need to be open), then easy loading of tasks into LB.

My program is called IntelliInput4LB, because it can take your plain English sentences with task description and due date + context/place setting and insert it into LB. Some examples of input:

Remember The Milk today @Shopping
Take the trash out on 12/12/2007 @Home
Exercise daily @Gym
Go to the gym weekly
Finish report by next Tue
Buy Birthday present for my wife due tomorrow @Shopping

These tasks will be processed by the program, the date and context information is extracted (i.e. today, daily, weekly, 12/12/2007, next Tue, tomorrow, @Home,etc) and translated into a format which LB understands.

MAIN FEATURES:

* small program, easy on your computer resources, you can keep it in the memory all the time
* allows you input "date by calendar" in plain English (e.g today, tomorrow, 03/05/07, in 5 days, etc see examples above) as part of you task title
* allows you input "due date" in plain English (e.g. by Monday, by next Tue, by tomorrow, etc)
* you can input repeating ToDos with expressions like "daily", "weekly", "monthly", etc.
* the place or context can be indicated as well (@home, @desk, @calls)
* almost no restrictions on where you put these expressions within your ToDo line
* no complicated syntax to learn
* you can review and accept or decline what the program is about to insert into your LB outline before proceeding (easy check whether your plain English was recognised)
* in the options you can set your date format as British or American, the path to LB, and whether you use "@" for your contexts in LB
* and much, much more ;-) (to come if I get positive feedback)

Please check out the program, start using it and you will see how much easier it becomes to input your random ideas into LB!

Please send me bug reports, let me know how this works for you, and what else you would like to see in future versions!

Here is the link to my web page from where you can download the program, the pdf documentation (contains detailed installation instructions!), and can read more about IntelliInput for LB! Check out the screenshots as well! For a quick download use the menu on the right side of the web page!

P.s. The program is donationware. This means it if fully functional, never expires, no nag screens, but if you find yourself using it regularly please make a donation (link is in the program).

Looks really Useful

Hi Viktor

I am surprised that you have not had any comments added here already.

Maybe your utility will help me! Being able to choose different parts of the outline for different tasks would be a great update.

Anyway, it looks great and I wish you lots of luck with it.

Please move this to the Windows Forum

Would the Llamas kindly consider moving this thread to the Windows Forum? While not strictly a support issue, Using Life Balance Effectively is best kept platform-neutral. Indeed, the above announcement does not as much as mention the fact that the proffered program is Windoze-only. With no disrespect to a valued member of the LB community, Macintosh users are all too familiar with the default presumption that an application is for Windows unless stated otherwise.

Done...

Good point, Ashkenaz!

Thanks for letting us know that it would be more appropriately posted to the Windows area.

And a word to the wise...

And while it should go without saying, it would be prudent for the less adventurous ones among us to keep in mind that if you do decide try this utility out.... you are traveling at your own risk.

We haven't tried this utility ourselves. So, we're can't personally endorse it or vouch for whether it is well behaved or not in all circumstances.

On the Mac, we have Applescript as a sanctioned way of manipulating the elements in the Life Balance data files, but the equivalent sanctioned interface to the data file does not exist yet on Windows.

So, again, it should go without saying... be sure to have good backups and use your judgement about whether or not this would be a help to you.

This utility is offered from one customer as a convenience to other customers. And we do admire and support that spirit of helpfulness among our customers.

:-)

Great Utility!!!

Very Handy. I look forward to the upgrades that are mentioned on Viktor's WEB Site.

Thank You Viktor,

Dwight...
