We can't have it all....

Hi fellow Palm users.

I'd like to congradulate the Llamas for the best PalmOS application available. However, in my judgement, the Palm platform is in it's golden years. I'm currently looking for a new device. The biggest criteria for me is if LB will run on it.

My question to the community is (and this would be good for a poll) :

Would you rather have LB for PalmOS development stop at 3.5, and have the iPhone verison come out sooner, or would you like to see the PalmOS version continue?

Now, being in the software business myself I realize that there are tough decisions to be made in where you spend your development time. I want to start a discusison to help the LLamas' do that. I suspect that this may be a unpopular topic.
For me, I'd rather have the iPhone version come out sooner....

I look forward to hearing your feedback.

NEED LB on iPhone

Purely selfish. I have iPhone and love it but there is no adequate task list. I downloaded a free list program but you can't even prioritize on it. The iPhone is the perfect vehicle for LB. A superior software on a 21st century product. I can hardly wait for LB iPhone release.

In a business perspective, iPhone doesn't even sync with Mac calendar tasks. If you develop LB for iPhone you will be ahead of Apple itself. And what a marvelous product!

With thanks,

You can´t have it all......

... that´s true and I know that there are a small crowd at Llamagraphics working on LB...

But is this the rigth way to go??
To shut some users out (the Palm-gang, the "old farts"using an old PDA, the people resisting to buy an iPhone or another fancy, smanchy gadget.... ;-)) just to get a quicker developing on the iPhone !!!

I don´t know.. I´m an "old fart" my self.. using an Palm E2 (before that it was an Palm Zire 71, and I even used an old Visor Deluxe... waoh.. that was some good times....)

I don´t know how many Palm v. Mac users there are in the customers database at Llamagraphics.. what system is "biggest".... what system is prio one to develop??

And is it an option to stop developing one or another "system" loosing those customers? I don´t know...

So this question is actually up to the developers to take decision on, not us, the users....

some words from me...

Um, maybe a little perspective from those llamas will help?

There is no crowd of llamas, but we do have a crowd of customers. And they don't all want the exact same things. Go figure. :-)

I don't see any reason for people not to want to use the Palm software for Life Balance on existing Palm OS devices. It's already written. It's supported. We've made some nice improvements in the Palm build - check out the final candidates that we recently posted. There are a lot of Palm OS devices out there. I feel pretty certain that not all of those Palm OS phones have Life Balance installed on them yet, and the world would be a better place if they did! So, why not? ;-)

We're working on an iPhone app, too, which we're working on as swiftly as possible. It's not ready yet. Soon it will be, and then we expect that we may drive some iPhone sales for Apple too!

We'll do our best to balance out the workload as we go along, and we'll adjust as we see things change. :-)

Hope that helps keep things in perspective. It is almost never all or nothing. Lots of grey area.

Best wishes,

I won't be buying an iPhone

Well, I feel the iPhone is too much hype, too little function, and too expensive. I will continue to use the Palm for at least several more years until I find a better portable option.

But maybe you can

This topic has been run through so many times now elsewhere...

iPhone looks cool, that's the marketing magic. It is also expensive, buggy, very proprietary, with limited applications.

For about $90.00, I have a palm handheld that I can store and play non-DRM MP3s, create handwritten notes, paint and draw simple sketches, store and view photos, compose music, learn a language (and hear the spoken words) use multiple SD storage cards in 2 GB increments, use a dictionary, encyclopedia, and thesauraus, browse the web, look at a 320x320 hi rez screen, build a variety of databases, manage schedules and contacts, Bluetooth relevant data to my phone, and synch schedule, contacts, PDFs, MS office docs, databases, shopping lists, LifeBalance, etc. to my desktop plus a whole lot more functionality that I won't list. A considerable amount of this software is either freeware or very affordable. There is a screen keyboard as well as a stylus, I can plug in a small portable keyboard for heavier typing, and it carries on with all my other travel essentials without crippling me through airports. Set it up correctly and it is very stable. I run about 30 apps on my PDA and have had to do 2 hard resets in a year, both without a loss of important data. It comes very close to being like a little laptop that fits in your pocket. If I want to call someone I use my phone. If I need to work or want to play when I'm mobile (and sometimes when I'm home), I use my PDA and Bluetooth contact relevant info to my phone. It is also much easier to take notes on my PDA when on I'm on the phone.

Additionally, if either my cell or PDA fails, I have at least the one device and a backup on the SD cards, so replacement and restoring is a breeze. This is just too good of a setup to pass by for a cooler looking (at least in the ads) and way more expensive device that can't be controlled and customized in the detail I need for my uses. Can you build databases on an iPhone or use language learning software? Maybe so, but I'm guessing not, or it will cost you a bundle.

Yes, Palm needs to develop new hardware that is competitive and "cooler" but the Palm platform is still being used globally and with an incredible diversity of uses. The open source community is still pretty strong. There are plenty of doctors, lawyers, scientists, many professionals who do a lot of field work, factory managers, and sales people, etc. who have been staying with this platform because of the cost, flexibility, portability and diversity of uses.

I've tried a lot of different ways to be mobile with my work and play and always end up seeing the Palm as the most efficient. So I will just carry on with what I've got til there are no more replacements. This is also an environmental choice. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it, replace it, toss it." Or, to use another catch phrase: "reduce, reuse, recycle". I see some of the best Palm software developers are continuing to support and develop their Palm software and also develop for the competition.

Obviously, I want Palm apps and hardware to grow and compete with what is more newly available. But I adore new technology when it's really good. I just haven't seen the really good in quite a while.

Just switched from Treo to iPhone

I've been using LB on PalmOS (+ Mac & PC) for a few years now. iPhone needs it badly - in fact I delayed buying an iPhone for quite a while partly due to the lack of LB. I have to agree that PalmOS is "in its golden years". Didn't have to be that way; but the owners of Palm have just let it atrophy and it's not going to be long before PalmOS starts to look old and quaint - kind of like the Apple IIe emulator my friend wrote to run on PalmOS (Speaking of emulators, for those of you in the biz, I'd love to see someone sneak a PalmOS emulator for iPhone onto the App Store, but I digress...)

Were I 'the Llamas', I'd be tempted to keep PalmOS as a stable base to try new ideas on whilst I drove the iPhone version up the learning curve. iPhone might not make it to maturity if Apple and AT&T can't get their act together with rollouts, DRM, contractual silliness, etc. So I don't know if I'd bet my company on iPhone at this point. Neither would I bet its future on PalmOS.

But I am on the customer side of this one; and I've bid a fond farewell to my Treo as I embrace the iPhone with it's immaturities and glitzy new features. I have to vote for moving forward on the iPhone and I've very excited to hear that the first iPhone release is already under development.

Why do we continue to look at either/or instead of both?

Carol I have been using Palm products since they came out. Prior to that I used a Psion, which was one of the first PDA's made. I now have a Smartphone and use most of the applications listed by Msfixit as well as some others she did not list.

I have used Life Balance for a couple of years and am now seriously managing my time and using Life Balance (which can be exported into Outlook and syncd with anything that syncs with Outlook. I actually use a software program which I purchased called Beyond Contacts to manage my calendar, contacts, notes, and tasks. In my opinion that is better, at least for me than Datebook which I also purchased awhile ago. For me this is the best of all possible worlds. The Task management that we can do with Life Balance is phenomenal and having it imported into outlook and then having it on my Smartphone gives me instant access to the data no matter where I am.

I think that the iPhone is over-rated right now and since I am not a fan, I don't know what its future will bring. I think this is ultimately the same conflict that many people have between Apple and Windows. I think it is wonderful that Life Balance is making it available for both Windows and Apple. To me this indicates their real commitment to their product.

They have a terrific product and I am sure that they will continue working on providing it for both platforms as indicated in Catherine's comment.

I am extremely grateful for all the work they are doing and how they continue to make improvements. I am sure that when the iPhone product is finished it will be as good as the products they currently have.

So, it doesn't sound like it has to be either/or and I for one am glad that they have taken the middle ground to provide products for all of us who will use them.

Thanks Catherine. etal. You do wonderful work and I will continue to keep updating my Windows/Palm version as you improve it. Thanks also for seeing the depth and breadth of your client base and doing your best to be responsive to all of us.

Carol

Thanks so much!

You really made my day!

We will keep doing what we can for everyone!

Many thanks again!

Well, I hate to be all selfish but....

I, too, was a loyal palm owner for many years but my love for apple was just bigger. The thought of an apple phone, while not perfect, had too much possibility/potential to pass up.

I would much prefer a Life Balance iphone version with the basics at the very least as fast as humanly possible. It would not be like the loyal palm users would be forgotten, just that the new iphone users would now be taken into account, too. Palm users already get to use LB, iphone users don't. Why should they get punished because they preferred to switch? Everyone is scrambling around for a good ToDo app for the iphone right now.

If LB would release something before then for the iphone, especially being such a great app with great reviews, it would probably do better than any of the options available at the moment. Life Balance would get all those new iphone users looking for an iphone ToDo app before they settle on something lesser. This is a great time to introduce it to people who have never heard of it or given it a try because they already had something they were using. ) And, hey, with all those new users will come more revenue and you can hire a whole new team just for palm. :)

Regardless, i am going to wait for an iphone LB but thats because i've owned it and used it and can't seem to function without it. :)
