Life Balance on iPhone in progress...

Actually, coming along nicely! We're excited about it.

ETA?

Tim Wheeler's picture

I've read some horror stories about the time it takes to get an application approved on the app store.

I know you're still working on the iPhone LB version, but is there a chance it will show up anytime near the 2.0 launch?

Horror stories?

cewhite's picture

Horror Stories? Yikes! Sounds like I may need "Mr. Pointy!" (<--allusion to Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

Hopefully it isn't all THAT bad. The process is certainly not instantaneous though, and I expect that Apple has a significant backlog of paperwork, contracts, and accounts to create.

You may not be aware that the final (non-beta) developer tools were also just released on July 11, and we've been trying to download and install them. Since we had some open bug reports to Apple, we would prefer to be using the release tools.

Stuart and I have been coding on the project as if we would make that July 11 date, and we will just keep pressing forward until it is complete, aiming for as close to the iTunes store opening date of July 11 as llama-ly possible. To be included for July 11, though, you had to submit earlier than that. And by the time they told us the earlier date... we knew we had no real chance to meet that and have it be...um.. what's the word I'm searching for.. oh, yeah... good. I dare say that some of the folks who may have rushed it, could be actually regretting that decision now.

We do still have some work to do on the application, but so far, it is looking good to us, and we're not that far off. The energy in the project is really nice too. It is intense work, but also very fun for us.

We will need to take some screen shots for the store at some point, so we can try to post those for you all too. Understand that won't be as high a priority though, compared to finishing up the project, and submitting to the actual store. I'm just saying... ;-)

We'll get there.... I may not know the exact date we'll be posted yet, but at this point the project looks finite and doable, we're still moving fast, and that's always a cheerful stage of any project.

I trust Apple will be able to get our listing out there when the time comes. It will be an easier and smoother process for all the developers as they get the starting whim whams worked out.

Thanks also for following along with this project! We are really glad to have your interest and support for what we're trying to do here.

So... hopefully no real horror stories from me...(As Catherine does a quick backflip, deploys "Mr. Pointy" and creates an exploding cloud of dust from some kind of worrisome little thing.)

We just need the right weapon... oh...attitude :-)

Grrrr! Argh!

Need LifeBalance on the iPhone. Seriously, as in I have to drag a Treo to work just to have life balance. As in LifeBalance is keeping my professional life, um, balanced. Help, I'm getting off-balance!

i'll bring you guys pizza to help with the late nights :)

I refuse to buy an iPhone unless LB is on it.

...waiting with bated breath.

I'm in!

Definitely want to support the Llamas with the iPhone version but two things:

- I just saw that Stuart is going to a funeral (follow your llamas on the main page). I'm very sorry to hear he/you both lost somebody. Real life always comes first, ALWAYS. Jobs, coding, customers, etc. always come after.

- Now, I'm willing to pay good money for an iPhone LB. Seriously.

Any ideas how/if it will sync? Screen shots would be great. As the current to-do lists on the iPhone are too similar. As much as I read that some folks want the LB interface updated, I personally enjoy the layout. The tree view is wonderful.

I hate not having a mobile LB with me though!! I can only see what's next when I have my laptop up and running. I guess at the end of the day I could print stuff out, but I'm too impatient and ADHD for that ;)

I switched back to a Palm from my first iPhone just to have LB. Then i switched back to iPhone a few months later when they released the info that an iPhone SDK was coming out. I thought: OH YEAH! IPHONE LIFE BALANCE!!!

So, one more person waiting patiently but highly interested.

Is there *anything* we can do to help? I don't think you can beta on iPhones, only in the SDK, right? I mean you either release it or you don't in the store.

anyway, good luck Catherine and Stuart. you guys are great!

Thanks for following along with us on this journey!

Hi there Nomad!

Thanks for the suggestions and for your sympathetic thoughts for Stuart and his family.

It was his Aunt Florence, his father's brother's wife, who passed away. She was older and a really sweet lady. Always very kind to us.

Getting Stuart out the door and on the train was even more of an adventure than usual because our car is in for service. I had to borrow my mom's car to get him on the next train South to get him there on time. But we did it! I got word that he made it to his mom's house.

On the iPhone. The very first version probably will not sync. It will be a standalone application. Think of it more like the early Newton and Palm releases. Much nicer, obviously! We want to get the basics right on the platform first.

The interface is a little different... to take advantage of how the iPhone does things. It stlll looks like Life Balance while being iPhone-y!

We've taken some screen shots, so when I do get a chance, I will try to post more about that.

You are right that how to do beta testing is sort of an unusual iPhone issue that is being worked out. I'm not sure if/how we'll be able to handle that.

As for how to help... you just did! Your message is very cheerful and you will never know just how much that helps us keep doing what we do here!

One other thing that really helps is to let us know if Life Balance is helping you to achieve some specific result -- or complete a special project --share some of those cool goals and accomplishments in your account profile here!!!

Examples might be things like "I regained enough time to take a vacation after 10 years without...", "I'm renovating a farmhouse...", "I manage a particular exotic lifestyle where I travel to my other house in Fiji every six months...", "I am going back to school...", "I am training for a marathon..." "I run a small business that does something fascinating and exciting..."

You know...Interesting and specific stuff like that... that YOU PROBABLY TAKE FOR GRANTED AS A LIFE BALANCE USER NOW...and often really ordinary things too are helpful. Just knowing that you use Life Balance if you are working in Real Estate, or a student, or a mom with kids... that stuff brings it down to earth, and makes it REAL to other people. So, when you celebrate a cool milestone... or just an everyday Life Balance "Aha! moment" let us know about it too!

Look for the "optional fun stuff" tab under "my account" -- could be a great place to do that. ;-)

Best wishes, and thanks again for the great energy and encouragement for the home stretch on this project!

Hi there, Just another 'me

Hi there,

Just another 'me too' voice of support from a new Life Balance (Mac) user, who is eagerly awaiting updates on a potential Life Balance for the iPhone.

When I upgraded my iPhone to v2.0, Life Balance was just about the *first* application I tried to search for in the App Store, just in case...

So, good luck to you, and I'll keep an eye out here for any further updates!

ps - I understand if in a first incarnation, synch'ing might not be possible, but I hope there might be a way to _import_ a desktop LB file to the iPhone, so we wouldn't have to re-enter everything, to get started?

I understand the question....

cewhite's picture

Hi there Bezoar,

Thanks for the enthusiasm!

I understand the question....

Not sure I know the answer yet... it's complicated by the fact that we're trying to change the whole way we do the data storage for iPhone.

So... I understand that our existing customers will want something like that... and synch.

Not sure if it will be there on the very first iPhone posting. Will talk it over with Stuart when he gets back.

Sorry to hear about Stuart's

wscottmeeks's picture

Sorry to hear about Stuart's aunt. My sympathies.

Let me know if you do figure out some way to beta test, but looking forward to it either way.

Go, go power Llamas!

Read your "Follow your Llamas" today

* Admiring Stuart's work. The iPhone optimizations went from a painfully slow one minute refresh to less than a second. Making it zippy! Good!

It's so thrilling to follow your comments regarding the iPhone software development. Hard to keep still.............

Good Luck!

-Steffen

Thanks for your encouragement too!

cewhite's picture

Hi there Steffen,

Thanks so much for following along with us. We are enjoying the work, too.

I kind of like these short little Twitter messages (140 characters) in the "Follow the Llamas" because it is an easy way to let folks know more about how we think, work and play -- that we have Life Balance issues too -- and that we are serious and committed to steady progress on this project.

And there's the whole "High tech Haiku" aspect of it that I find appealing.
To live in the moment, it helps if you start noticing moments!

:-)

Thanks again!

Just to add to the supporting cast....

Hi Catherine et al,
Just adding my support for the upcoming release of LB for iphone/touch.
Checking out the site regularly for updates and I know that I am being a pain, but like a naughty kid in the back of the car...are we nearly there yet?!

for some value of nearly...

cewhite's picture

Hi there,

Thanks for the support for the work we're doing. It is good to have you checking in and keeping a watchful eye on the road ahead, even from the back seat!

Now, shall we play some kind of license plate bingo or something to pass the time? And stop pinching your sister!

iphone general question

Jvanwalsum's picture

Hi Catherine-
can you answer a general question about iphone calendaring/task management and syncing? Why is it that the iphone doesn't do syncing of iCal tasks? I know there is the supposed Apple Mail ToDo folder, a clugey workaround that doesn't fool anyone; but if all my different calendars can sync, and my mail accounts, why not Tasks? And is this what makes the syncing problematic for you as well?

I'm frustrated with the over-reliance of Apple et. al on the supposed ubiquity of web availability. too many places have poor signal quality (including where I was in Scottsdale, AZ today), making web apps useless as load times are excessive. Do they think everyone lives in NY or SF?

Any info you can provide to enlighten would be most appreciated!
Keep up the good work!

Joyce
I love to ride my bi-cycle!

Fair question...

cewhite's picture

Hi there Joyce,

That's a fair question, and mostly it doesn't directly relate to the developer tools and stuff that we can't talk about covered under the (ahem) NDA, so...

First off, in my opinion, I do think that there is a certain developer world view that everyone lives in New York or San Francisco. There is a developer culture where folks do take for granted a higher level of technology infrastructure than truly exists yet in many places. I don't live in San Francisco or New York, so while I dream of such things, and I share the vision, my phone doesn't always work either. It keeps me grounded in reality! On the other hand, someone needs to go "first" and try things out, and that's okay too. :-)

That is one of the reasons why we as developers argued the case for "real" applications on the iPhone as opposed to only web apps. Web apps are not going to cut it for everyone. Sometimes you might want to see your Life Balance list in Scottsdale, Arizona! :-)

I think that the lack of tasks is simply a matter of priorities at Apple. If I recall correctly, tasks were missing/rudimentary in iCal initially too.

What makes syncing problematic is more of an SDK topic, so I'll leave that to imagination and wild speculation. :-)

Thanks so much for your support for what we're trying to do here too!

Best wishes,

note size limits on mac/iphone?

Hi,

I previously purchased lifebalance, but I had to moved to a different solution because lifebalance didn't support large note sizes (eg 32kb), and I found a lot of my critical data was being truncated.

Does your mac and iphone version have this note size limitation?

Adrian

No note limitations

cewhite's picture

The notes are not limited in size on the Mac.
The iPhone version of Life Balance has no limit on notes either.

Notes are limited on Palm OS and in the conduit. However, the conduit is careful to only copy the truncated note back to the Mac if it has been edited on the Palm. Otherwise, if the note has not changed on the Palm side, the full note will remain on the Mac.

Best wishes,

--Catherine--*

Lots of people rootin for ya!

Hey coders!
I just adopted Life Balance for the mac about 3 months ago and I LOVE IT! I can't wait for you to release the iphone version! I've been checking in on the forum almost daily since the app store opened and just wanted send some more support your way!
Keep up the wonderful work, it's greatly appreciated!
-Zev

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

cewhite's picture

As we round the bend... All well wishes gratefully accepted! Goooood!

I will add that sometimes it can be surprisingly tricky to decide "are we there yet?"

To use (and perhaps overstretch) the sailing race analogy... there is no Race Committee Boat or finish line markers out here. At some point we will just have to look around and toot on the whistle ourselves and say that's it, we're done, and heave the line over to the iTunes store and see what happens next!

It's kind of weird and unexpected, but that's the way it works, pretty much.

Anyway thanks again, and for all the kind thoughts along the way!

Best wishes,

--Catherine--*

Localized version of LB for iPhone?

Botanyman's picture

While you're working on the iPhone version of Life Balance, have you structured your things in order to offer localized version of it? I know that several iPhone applications are constructed in such a way that it uses the langage set on the iPhone.

That would be very nice!!!

Continue your good work in this. We are patiently waiting for this creation of ours :-)

Merci!

Martin

Keep it up!

I'm a resident physician, aspiring clinical researcher, husband, father, former Newton owner, and long-time LB Palm user. I desperately need your iPhone version to make sense of my life. I've tried Omni's competing product out of desperation and have been unimpressed. Your product, put simply, is the Best Thing Out There for me and many others, even before it has been released! I've had my iPhone for over a year now, and it remains incomplete without your application. Another user said he'd bring pizza by to help you through the long nights. I'll bring the Red Bull.
