No sync! :-( Unterminated string in ByteInputStream

Catherine and other friendly Llamagraphicsians,

I am happy with *my* Life Balance setup on my Samsung i500 cell/PalmOS phone syncrhonizing with my mac with OS X.

My girlfriend just bought the identical phone (yeah, I know, aren't we cute) and I'm trying to get her hooked up with the Life Balance sync. It doesn't work!

Device: Samsung i500
OS version: the launcher says 4.0 (no updates, that I know of for this device)
the sync log says 0x04103000
Life Balance: Version 3.2.6 for the OS X app, the conduit, and the handheld app
Hotsync software: Missing Sync 4.0.4 (59)
(And I know you "never hesitate to recommend the Missing Sync to [your] Mac and Palm OS customers. " :-)

When syncing, it creates this error in the sync log:
??Unhandled exception: Unterminated string in ByteInputStream.
??Life Balance conduit version 3.2.6
??Failed Life Balance (0x4001)
??Sync completed successfully at 5/24/05 2:17 PM (14:17:44)

Argh! It doesn't sync it at all. :-(

Here's what I've tried:

* nuking the app on the desktop side and the conduit itself, and re-installing
* nuking the Palm version of the app with its databases, restarting the palm device, then re-installing Life Balance, then running it once to create the databases, then trying to sync.

Basically, I've nuked all the components and reinstalled *multiple* times each! No help!

(I've also tried doing the sync *before* launching the app, but then I get a different error code in the log that I deduced was a databases-don't-exist-yet error)

Ack!

Please help my girfriend get organized with her great new Palm OS phone... which is *exactly* like the one I've been using for 1.5 years with Life Balance (updating to the latest version each time...).

But the Life Balance databases are *fresh*. Empty on the handheld. I've deleted the databases altogether with the app and re-installed. No difference.

But, you're right that it could be the datebook records...

Thanks for the tip. I got DBScan and noticed:

a) there were many things it complained about that seemed bogus, such as "starttime > endtime" -- it didn't like my nurse girlfriend's work schedule 11pm-7am ... it was ignoring the date and saying "Hey, 11pm is *after* 7am! That's impossible!" So, there were LOTS of those types of events.

b) there were a couple of other odd things, like an event with no name and descrip which DBscan didn't like. (BTW, it was also listed as on 12/24/95, if that has any signifcance in your timekeeping world.)

c) on her handheld...and her Entourage world, she had a lot of events in the past, unlike my computer/handheld world. She had never enabled the "auto purge" Entourage feature for events (Delete non-repeating events old than 5 days, etc).

So, I figured that items (a) or (b) could be suspicious, but there were many hundreds of events to look at closely. So because of (c) , I set the auto-purge, relaunched Entourage, re-synched, and then I only had 150ish (not 500ish) records to deal with. When I resynched Life Balance, it just worked.

Conclusions for the Life Balance team:
1) Life Balance gets tripped on something in the Datebook, and i think that "verify data" should scan the datebook for more things that should trip it up
2) I'm not sure what tripped it up, but i recommend that you experiment with oddities (a) and (b) mentioned above and load it up with tons of events of different types.

Conclusions for Life Balance users who get this error:
1) do verify data in LB -- although it didn't help for me

2) If you use Entourage or another desktop calendar with "auto purge" for events (Delete non-repeating events old than 5 days, etc), use it. It will greatly reduce the dates database if you've been using the app for a while. That will reduce the CHANCE of oddities because there are fewer database records to worry about.

3) If you get this error, back up your Palm directory for safekeeping, and then try DBscan on the Palm device (http://www.pimlicosoftware.com/utilities.htm) and scan the current database for weird stuff. Follow its instructions.

4) if you changed anything in DBScan, resync your calendar (set the Entourage/Calendar conduit to handheld overrides desktop first!)

5) then, retry synching Life Balance

6) Have a nice big glass of water and a few deep breaths. That always helps me. :-)
