Anyone working, mothering and going to graduate school?

HELP!
I'd really like to know if anyone meets the above description, which implies an absolutely crazy life. Not to mention ADHD. AND an active bicyclist. Needless to say, I can't fit it all it! Ultimately, I'd really like to not reinvent the wheel, and tap into the setup and approaches that some of you are already doing (I'm not so smart that I can't benefit from those of you who are!)
Long story short, I have really liked what I see with LB; but I'm still confused on implementation (especially Places and SubPlaces). And I am working with the GTD approach (loosely). I'm am pretty out of control and HATE that feeling!
My office and house have been a mess of clutter and piles but I've read the GTD basics and some of the LB forum conversations. So I'm ready to get to work. I've started in my office (I can now see my desk!), and I've got a To Do box of paper-stuff to get into GTD order, have some filing to set up, a TON of academic articles to file (but at least they are sorted into topics now), and I still have a large pile of paper (in a box) left to pick through.
I have a daughter in college (not much needed there besides money ;-) ), and a daughter in High School (gifted, ADHD, TS, OCD and needing constant interventions with teachers, etc.).
I'm taking one class (it's pretty cool, on Visual Ethnography, or using visuals for research in social science and education).
I started a new job this week, program evaluation in the business college at a national university, 1/2 time till I get my thesis written. Re the thesis: I have a committee, I have data (acquired when previously employed and released by the IRB as "existing data" and not subject to further review), I have a rough outline but haven't yet filed my proposal. I do have a general to-do list for those things. I use a PDA (since the days of Palm Pilot) because I need alarms/reminders and constant ability to figure out what's next. I have been on a Mac Powerbook, but I am being forced (again) to use an XP laptop. This means moving from using Circus Ponies Notebook and Mark Space Notebook with iCal and Mail, to using MS Exchange Mail, Notes and Office OneNote (which I have used before).
Ultimately I need to be 1. Organized (which implies a documented process), 2. Mobile, 3. Synchronized and 4. Disciplined (this is the part that gets me every time...). Oh, and flexible, so that when it (the best intentions and organization) falls apart, I can put it back together again (a Humpty Dumpty thing....).
Anyone still with me on this? Do any of you have some LBE files that I can start with? I liked Ratz, but I didn't understand the places concept well enough.
CHEERS!
Joyce

RE: Anyone working, mothering and going to graduate school?
Hi Joyce,
You've certainly got a lot going on. I'm neither mothering nor going to graduate school, so I'm not the ideal respondent.
There is a page of .lbe files that includes, down at the bottom, a template that Ratz put together:

Also, at least one beginning user found my take on using LB and GTD helpful, so I'll point that out too:

I hope something in there is useful.

RE: Anyone working, mothering and going to graduate school?
Hi there Joyce,
My advice is to start with your own life rather than a generic template, since you are already being very clear about what you want to accomplish. You've already written a lot of what's on your mind here, and you just need to toss that into Life Balance. Let's start and I think you'll catch on to the idea pretty quickly!
Your top level goals, from your message are fairly clear, and you don't need to go much beyond your post to get a really good start!
- Start new job
- Clear out the old clutter
- Take good care of my girls
- Complete cool class on Visual Ethnography
- Finish thesis
You may or may not want to put your academic goals together under a larger task dedicated to continuing your education.
I've created a little LBE file based on your post to give you a jump start!
I've put it in the resources section of our web site, since I had some trouble with the Forum not posting it right... (I will fix that later....)
You can find that here:
