RE: ADDA regional meetings...
These meetings are incredible for anyone who attends! For those just discovering that ADD might be part of their programming, it's a chance to be with a couple hundred of your friends, seeing and learning how they have channeled their ADD into success, happiness, and have dealt with some of the stumbling blocks that are part of ANYONE'S life.
For the family/friends/doctors/significant others, it's a chance to learn, if you haven't already, that ADD isn't made up, it isn't a crutch, it's a challenge that can best be met by supportive ideas, and what sorts of support are best for a given situation. I still remember an early conference of couples, and one couple mentioned that when the husband came home from work, he was practically jumping with the need for physical exercise. His wife finally developed a system where she'd put his in-line skates and a change of clothes in the hallway bathroom, and he'd come home, say "Hi", change, and do a time of a couple miles of skating, then come back, and be able to deal with the children and the home chores beautifully.
I urge anyone who's within traveling distance of these wonderful conferences to take advantage of the opportunity, and have a GREAT time finding out you're perfectly normal, sane, and INTELLIGENT, and learning how to channel your energies into success!
RE: ADDA regional meetings...
I attended a regional CHADD conference on June 23, 2007, and can attest to the tremendous value I gained from attending, and I suspect the same can be had from the ADDA regionals as well. I was very fortunate (in my opinion) to listen to and meet Thomas E. Brown, Ph.D., and several other significant luminaries in the fields of AD/HD research and treatment. Dr. Brown in particular presented much of the key information and expanded upon and added new examples to many of the already excellent examples from his outstanding book "Attention Deficit Disorder - The Unfocused Mind in Children and Adults." He and the others also examined and critiqued other significant researchers and materials in the field, which was truly an enlightening experience and of direct benefit to me beyond my expectations.
I too would strongly suggest attending one or more of these conferences if you or someone you know is "blessed with The Big A" (ADD or AD/HD) - the knowledge gained, resources found, and mutual support shared is truly worth many more times the cost of admission (and transportation/lodging even if one of these is not close at hand)! Please do this for yourself and/or those you truly care about, the benefits in my experience were both immediately and apparently long-lasting and well-worth the expense and effort.
Thank you Catherine and Kris for your postings!
