At the risk of having all those parental internet robots censor our site, we simply had to include Barenaked Ladies' Stunt as this week's LlamaLlink since they are in town here in Boston again, where they have been a popular favorite band for a long time.
The Ladies are actually fellows from Canada who clown around in the most charming way if you catch them on a radio interview or in concert. Their music is very clean, lots of wipes, soap and polish applied here. This album contains the hit single, "One Week" which is full of intricate lyrics such as "I like the sushi 'cause it's never touched the frying pan./ Hot like Wasabi when I bust rhymes/ Big like LeAnn Rimes/because I'm all about value" sung at tongue twisting speeds. What makes this song work though is the transition to the smooth chorus that sighs, "How can I help it if I think you're funny when you're mad." However, our reasons for including Stunt as a top pick for this week are the cuts "Never is enough" and "Who needs sleep?" The song "Never is Enough" celebrates the fact that there are all kinds of things that we are under no obligation to do at all, like "blow a thousand deutsche marks to get drunk in a pub with some Australians." We can skip that and lead perfectly happy lives! We have a special place in our hearts for "Who needs sleep" which starts out with the line "Now I lay me down not to sleep" and takes off on a sheep counting expedition that will definitely make you smile if you've ever tossed and turned. The BNL are fun, and always a little surprising. Parents need not fear the lyrics overmuch, although they are sophisticated and not for young children. The song Alcohol at first playing sounds like it is recommending drunken binges, but if you listen carefully, the story ends with "Would you please ignore that you found me on the floor trying on your camisole?" So, nothing is quite what it seems with Barenaked Ladies. Stunt is definitely all about value, from beginning to end... "like Snickers, guaranteed to satisfy." |
