Rough Seas? Smooth Sailing.

Sometimes events over take us suddenly with no warning. There are other times when you know you are in for a rough patch of weather in your life and there's just no avoiding it. You lose a job. Someone gets sick. Or maybe it is just one gosh darn little thing after another, and now the dog is puking on the carpet. Whatever the situation, there are things that we can do that can help us to survive and thrive in the storms that invariably come and go.

When you see those dark clouds forming ominously on the horizon, imagine that you are going on a journey through the difficulty. When events in your life get overwhelming or confusing, it can feel like there is no convenient place to stop along the way. Like a sailor preparing for an ocean cruise, you can put yourself into a place of preparedness before you leave the dock. Pack every cubby of your psyche with provisions that you might need when the only way out is through.

Here are seven things to stow away in your mental emergency kit.

** Pack a flashlight and batteries. You need light and energy! Make a list of 50 life affirming tasks that you can do anytime you need a quick pick me up. These ideally should be small tasks that restore your equilibrium and offer an immediate smile. Eat an orange. Pat the dog. Walk in the sunshine. Draw. Listen to music. Sing along.

** Extra jar of peanut butter. You might be out there in the wilds longer than you think. How is your financial condition. Review where you stand, and make a plan for the long haul. How much do you have in savings? How much can you get by on if you are frugal? Do the math now to figure out your minimum needs and plan for contingencies.

** A map. You wouldn't sail out of sight of shore without nautical charts and some knowledge of navigation. Do you know the territory where you will be traveling? Have you ever experienced anything similar to what you are doing now. Has anyone? Anywhere? Throughout history? Human experience and knowledge is vast. The experience of others may help you to avoid pitfalls in your current situation. There are helpful books on everything from buying a new car to taking care of a baby. Go to your library or bookstore early and often!

** Warm blanket. In the Peanuts comic strip, Linus always had his security blanket handy. Curling up on the couch under a snuggly throw can warm the heart too. The body needs a good night's sleep to recuperate from stress. Take your teddy bear!

** A radio. Pay attention to outside events that might affect your situation or present opportunities. Is there some part of your situation that might open a door to a new possibility? Use the changes in your life as fuel to a positive outcome.

** Water. Cool clear and refreshing. A glass of water is the beverage of choice when you are under stress. Steer clear of alcohol, too much coffee, tea, or anything that can affect your mood. Many fruit drinks, and sports beverages now contain herbal ingredients. Be sure that you read the ingredients of all soft drinks, and understand their potential side effects.

** A buddy. Don't fly solo. Don't isolate yourself from those who care about you. You are going to need someone to haul you back in when you fall overboard. Talk to your friends and family and involve them in your plans. When you have strength in reserve, make sure that you offer to help out with the chores and whatever needs doing. As part of your overall support network, don't forget to call on a trained professional, licensed clinical social worker, or clergy who can offer an objective opinion and perspective on a difficult situation.

No matter who you are, or where you live, there are times that are trying and difficult. When the storm finally passes, don't go chasing after it! Another one will be along soon enough! In your own time and in your own way, make room in your life for the sunshine and the clear blue skies to return again. They always do.
