The Franklin Planner people say that you need a Moral Compass. Well, maybe so, but sometimes it is more practical to carry a REAL compass. Bill Bryson attempts (and quickly fails) to "through hike" the Appalachian Trail with his traveling companion Katz. Although he gives up on the one fell swoop through hike approach, he does manage to hike many interesting sections of the Appalachian Trail in two week stints. Bill Bryson is a wonderful storyteller and there are plenty of tall tales which he deftly fishes out of his backpack that will make you laugh out loud. We chose A Walk in the Woods for the way that Bill Bryson shows us how to accept our limitations while we nevertheless make genuine progress on our intended goals. We are not surprised that a sense of humor turns out to be indespensible hiking equipment, although it may be hard to come by at REI or EMS. When we wrote our software Life Balance™, we understood that many time management systems are big on guilt. Life Balance™ is not like that. We know that an all or nothing approach to your life's goals is more than likely to lead to nothing. If it turns out that you really can't walk the whole Appalachian Trail - we still want to see how far you can go. Put on your hiking boots and take the first step. The experience on the first attempt may help you make better progress on the next attempt. I give Bill Bryson big points for not putting himself or his friend Katz in danger by taking on more than he was prepared to handle out in the wilderness, which joking aside, is dangerous. Bears!
