    Release Notes for v3.2.1
    Monday, July 8, 2003

    Changes since 3.1.1

    New features
Life Balance now supports opening, inserting and saving exchange (.lbe) files. An exchange file is a special format intended for sharing among Life Balance customers. Use it for creating project templates, starter files and examples to share with your family, clients, coworkers and friends.

The Export Exchange File command exports the selected task, all descendents, and all places and events referenced by the tasks to the specified .lbe file. The Export command is useful if you only want to share a specific section or project from your Outline rather than the whole thing.

The Insert Exchange File command opens the specified .lbe file and inserts the corresponding outline as a sibling of the selected task. Any Places in the .lbe file will also be imported but any existing Places with the same name will not be modified. Insert is undoable.

The Open file dialog now supports an additional filter (.lbe) for exchange files. Opening a .lbe file will import the file and open it in a new window. This file can then be saved like any other. You might want to use the Open command to preview an exchange file before you insert it.

The Save file dialog supports an additional format (.lbe) for exchange files. Saving as a .lbe will export the entire outline to the specified file. Because the exchange format does not capture all the data, the current document will not be considered saved. That is, the window caption will not change and if the data had been modified, it will still be considered modified.

      Win Mac
New sample data has been generated for Life Balance on the desktop. The new data highlights more features and includes extensive notes to document these features.   Win Mac
Added a mostly transparent Autosave feature. AutoSave happens automatically every five minutes. If Life Balance crashes, on the next startup it detects any autosave files that were left behind and offers to restore them.   Win Mac
Added a basic Find/Find Again capability.   Win Mac
Added support for the Palm 5-way navigator control. Left and right move back and forth through the four main screens. The center button selects the first task on the screen, or expands or toggles the checkmark of the selected task. The up and down buttons page up and down if no task is selected, or select the prev/next task if a task is selected.       Palm
Added support for the Virtual Silkscreen area on the Sony Clie series.          Palm
Scrollbar size is computed in the background, allowing continued interaction with the application during the process.          Palm
The Actual Pie chart is now computed in the background, allowing continued interaction with the application during the process. Palm
    Tasklist display performance improved.          Palm
Added code to deselect the current task when the user taps on the form background of the Outline, To Do List or Balance views.       Palm
Modified drag scrolling to improve interactivity. Shortened the paging delay. Made two different scrolling speeds available. Dragging the pen just a little beyond the top or bottom of the outline will scroll slowly, and dragging the pen farther from the outline will scroll more quickly.       Palm
We now include PDF documentation files for the desktops and the documentation has been revised for the whole product line.   Win Mac Palm
Added time display to calendar events. Time is minimized if space is scarce.    Win Mac
All events now have a color bar matching the corresponding top-level item (TLI). If a task is selected, matching appointments are highlighted with a frame of the TLI color. If an event is selected, it is highlighted in the calendar as in the task lists, and the corresponding task is highlighted with a frame.    Win Mac
"Today" is highlighted in the Calendar by shading the date bar at the top of the current day block.    Win Mac
Events with no time set now sort to the top of the event list.    Win Mac
Clicking the Event Proxy icon in the Event details now updates the visible Calendar page so that the selected event is visible.   Win Mac
Clicking on the Task Proxy icon now makes the task visible in the visible task list rather than just in the Outline.   Win Mac
Text for the date display for routinely tasks past the due date changed from "oops" to "overdue".   Win Mac
The collapse and expand state of tasks in the Outline is now saved and restored when opening files.   Win Mac
Online help has been updated to match the PDF documentation.   Win Mac
The HotSync progress dialog now says Life Balance Done at the end.   Win Mac
The conduit detects if iSynch is in the foreground and pushes the conduit manager back to the foreground to prevent syncs from hanging.     Mac
Added proxy document icon to title bar. This means that command-click in the title bar of the window will reveal the location of the document and the document can be moved to another directory by dragging the icon in the title bar of the window.       Mac
The Save As dialog now automatically appends .lbd to the file name and supports the "hide extension" checkbox.     Mac
The first time it runs, Life Balance on Macintosh now registers with Internet Config as the application to handle .lbd and .lbe files. This should make it easier to download .lbe files from the internet.     Mac
Double-clicking a day in the Calendar month or week view will open the corresponding day view.   Win
Enhanced the event tooltips to include the end time if the duration is non-zero and the full text of the task name.    Win
Added a Window->Restore Default Layout command which will restore the size of the window and the internal panels to reasonable values.    Win
    Bugs fixed
Fixed a bug in the conduit that was causing certain moved tasks to be left in the wrong position after a sync. This was causing the "incorrect wish level" log message.    Win Mac Palm
Fixed a bug in the conduit that could prevent correct syncing of an item if certain changes were made on both the desktop and Palm before syncing.    Win Mac  Palm
Balance preferences now sync. If either value is changed on both the desktop and handheld, priority is given to the desktop values. Note that these preferences will not begin syncing until changed on one platform or the other.   Win Mac Palm
Desktop overwrites Handheld sync now preserves DateBook record categories.   Win Mac Palm
Fixed bug with Palm DateBook alarms being cleared on Desktop overwrites Handheld sync.   Win   Mac Palm
Fixed a bug in calculation of the first repeat of a By Calendar task if only the first instance is moved, creating an exception appointment. This could cause the due date to be incorrect and could also cause the application to hang under certain circumstances when selecting the task.   Win Mac
Fixed a problem where splitting an event was losing the start time.   Win Mac
Fixed the handling of the window close button so that it now properly reflects the modification state of the document.     Mac
Life Balance will now open .lbd files copied from Windows.     Mac
Fixed a bug where closing a modified document and then typing command D for don't save would leave a blank window on the screen.     Mac
Fixed errors when saving modified documents to iDisk or NFS file servers.       Mac
Fixed the Macintosh layout code so that the hours panel in the task details would use all of the available space.     Mac
Fixed bug where pressing Enter when no task was selected could cause a crash.     Mac
Fixed bug where the place at the top of the To Do List would revert to All Places after a HotSync.     Mac
Added code to detect and prevent certain problems that can arise with multi-threading.   Win
Rationalized the directory behavior of file dialog boxes: if an existing file is open, open, export and save as default to the file's directory and open and export default to the file's basename while import defaults to the last selected directory. If no file is yet associated with the document, then the initial default is to the My Documents virtual directory and the dialogs remember the selected directory. The most important ramification of this change is that one can now reliably determine the file associated with the current document by using the Save As command.   Win
Discovered and fixed a significant problem with how the Windows conduit and desktop application were communicating. This could have lead to the conduit timing out in certain circumstance, most often when a non-Life Balance application takes more than five seconds to respond to a Windows message. The net result of the fix should be fewer crashes and slightly faster syncing in some cases.   Win
Filled in HotSync action message in conduit settings dialog.    Win
Duplicate Task enabled only in Outline, and Duplicate Place on in Places.    Win
Added code to prevent Calendar scroll thumb from appearing.    Win
Worked around a .NET bug in pasting large clipboard items to Notes.    Win
Pasting Unicode text to Place dropdowns now works correctly.    Win
Fixed a bug that was causing Ctrl-Arrow in tasklist after clicking in editbox to beep and was also causing subsequent presses of plain Arrow keys to fail.   Win
Fixed a bug with displaying conflict icons in appointment lists.    Win
Fixed a problem where multiple appointment tooltips could be displayed at once.    Win
Fixed a problem where the file was always being considered modified even if no changes were made.   Win
Fixed the calendar arrows which could disappear sometimes.   Win
For consistency, changed "Appointment" to "Event".   Win
Fixed the calendar redisplay timer which could sometimes get an error.   Win
Fixed the problem where printing was not laying out the list correctly.   Win
Improved handling of certain exceptional conditions (e.g. file access denied) to provide more information to the user.   Win
Fixed bug with the scrollbar not resizing correctly in some cases.   Win
Fixed problems restoring the window to its correct size, particularly after hotsync.   Win
Tasks completed by To Do List import process are now exported to DayNotez.       Palm
Fixed a bug where all "by Date Book" events would show as "Not in Date Book" after restoring from backups. (Running the Verify Data command on the Palm would already repair this condition.)       Palm
3.2.1: Fixed a bug in the exchange file output format for tasks with zero leadtime.   Win Mac
3.2.1: Removed an "internal" comment from the sample data and added a note about new Routinely tasks starting out "overdue".   Win Mac
3.2.1: Fixed a bug in the code to insert exchange files which was causing the insert to fail midway through with large files.   Win
3.2.1: Fixed a problem with opening Life Balance in OS 10.1.3.      Mac
3.2.1: Fixed -5000 error saving Life Balance documents to disks that don't have a Temporary Items folder.     Mac
3.2.1: Pie Charts now display in color on devices with 16-bit displays.          Palm
3.2.1: Improved the speed of recomputing the Actual Pie chart.       Palm
3.2.1: Modified the conduit so that the desktop file would load after loading the Palm data. This appears to reduce the chance of a race condition between Life Balance saving the desktop file and the conduit reading it.   Win
