What is the .NET framework exactly? and why do I need it?

Microsoft has used the name ".NET", as a term covering many different purposes and projects, which can seem very confusing. The part that we care about is the programmer's framework. It is a nicely written set of libraries necessary for Life Balance to run on Windows. It is a new standard class library from Microsoft that they have been encouraging developers to use. This is similar in some respects to the Visual Basic Library that is often required to install Visual Basic applications. It is pre-installed on Vista, and installed by default if you run Windows Update manually under XP.

Life Balance for Windows requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. The Life Balance installer will automatically download and install the right .NET framework for you if it is not already installed. Installation of the .NET framework requires administrator privileges. The .NET framework is a large download that may require a reboot. If you are installing Life Balance onto a computer with limited internet access, you may find it helpful to pre-install the Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 from the Microsoft Windows Update service before you run the Life Balance installer.

As developers, we also have permission for you to install the .NET framework redistributable from our site directly, which can be easier than navigating the Microsoft site, since you are already here and the Microsoft site changes frequently!
