Don Juan de Marco
Don Juan de Marco is the New Line Cinema film starring Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, and Faye Dunaway. It is an American Zoetrope production. The film was directed by Jeremy Leven, who also wrote the screenplay.
Jean Blake White is the author of the novel Don Juan de Marco, ... Don Juan de Marco is published by the Signet division of Penguin Books USA, Inc.
The book is the result of an unusual collaboration between Maryland poet and artist Jean Blake White and Hollywood Director Jeremy Leven.
"We agreed on everything but the ending," Jean said, "And that was surprising because Jeremy Leven and I have not worked together since we were both on the stage crew at Rye High School back in 1959. I certainly never before considered writing a novel in partnership with anyone else, but when he called in November and suggested it, it was impossible to resist the idea. We worked it out over the telephone."
The result is a sly romantic comedy based on Leven's screenplay and the New Line Cinema movie starring Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp and Faye Dunaway. The movie was released April 7, 1995. Leven's rich baroque vision offered Blake White the opportunity to exercise her gift for lyrical descriptions, structure, and an unusual poetic sensibility. "Jeremy insisted that I write a REAL book, as he called it, and refused to regard the project as a throwaway novelization. He and I both have strong artistic principles and we had some heated literary discussions via transcontinental phone calls and faxes." The book has sold over 35,000 copies in the United Stated and was printed in ten languages, including English, French, Spanish, Portugese, Japanese, German, Chinese, Finnish, Greek and Polish.
Blake White describes the book as having an Edenic nostalgia at its heart. She says that it is about growing older gracefully as well as about being young and passionate. "It is a book about love, of course. A book about Don Juan as its main character has to be about love. But our Don Juan, as played by Johnny Depp, is very sweet and not deceitful at all. That's one of his main problems!"
"I especially enjoyed writing the scenes in the seraglio," says Blake White, "and the romantic scenes between the characters played in the movie by Marlon Brando and Faye Dunaway. They took on lives of their own, as did the central character, Don Juan. I believe you write about Don Juan at your peril, with the ghosts of Lord Byron and Mozart looking over your shoulder all the time."
Blake White is at work on her second novel, LIFE CLASS. "It's going to be a thriller," she says, "There'll probably be some romance involved but the main action involves corporate intrigue." When that is finished, she says, "I'm going to Disney World."
